Have you ever wanted to know the real history of the Storm King battle, the fight to make GE clean up its PCBs? Or why the Hudson is called an estuary? Or wondered what species of bird just flew by? Now you can ask the Riverkeeper. On June 11, Riverkeeper will launch the first of many small group excursions with Alex Matthiessen, the Hudson Riverkeeper. In partnership with Hudson Valley Outfitters, Riverkeeper is hosting four-hour afternoon kayak trips, leaving from Cold Spring and touring Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River.
Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary, a unique 270-acre tidal marsh, has been managed by the National Audubon Society since 1970. This center is located on the east shore of the Hudson, directly opposite the West Point Military Academy. An important spawning and nursery habitat for scores of fish species, Constitution Marsh also provides sanctuary to bald eagles, least bitterns, Virginia rails, black ducks and over one hundred other bird species. As one of only 5 remaining large marshes on the 154-mile tidal portion of the Hudson River, it is critically important to the biological health of the entire Hudson River.
Learn all about Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River while traveling with the Riverkeeper and an expert guide from Hudson Valley Outfitters. E-mail twalsh@riverkeeper.org or call 914-478-4501 ext. 243 for tour availability and prices.
