Kayak Fundamentals I

Weekend Sessions - One 6-hour session with 30 minute lunch @ $200 (boat included).  Lunch is $10 or bring your own.

Wednesday Sessions - Three consecutive 2-hour sessions @ $200 (boat included)

 

This fun and enjoyable class gives you the skills necessary to captain your own craft safely and effectively.  This class is designed to provide a comprehensive start to your paddling career or a solid addition to your self-taught skills.  Don't let the fun fool you, this class is full of information.  Topics covered are:

Kayak nomenclature, kayak design, kayak styles, wind and weather, safety, boat fit, proper boat carrying, launching, landing, paddle strokes (forward, stop, sweep, reverse, draw, stern rudder), wet exit, self-rescue and t-rescue.

Kayak Fundamentals II

Weekend Session - One 6-hour session with 30 minute lunch @ $200 (boat included).  Lunch is $10 or bring your own.

Wednesday Sessions - Three consecutive 2-hour sessions @ $200 (boat included)

 

 

The fun continues . . . This class takes the foundation of Fundamentals I and adds more advanced boat control and recovery skills.  This class is designed so you challenge yourself and all your paddling skills.

Topics covered are:  Advanced wind and weather, Hudson River currents, ferry angles, bracing (low, high and sculling), boat edging and j-lean, bow rescue, Eskimo side rescue, high and low brace turns, advanced strokes (power forward, sweep with boat tilt, bow rudder and sculling draw).

 

Practice Sessions

Practice makes perfect.  Whether you are new to kayaking and want to improve your skills or you have been paddling for a few years and want to challenge yourself with some more advanced strokes. 

The session is 2 hours.

A British Canoe Union certified instructor or a ACA certified instructor will teach these classes in the Hudson River at Foundry Cove, Cold Spring, New York.
 

- Participants must register in advance.
- Cancellations made less than one week prior to the first session,
will not have their fees refunded.
- All reservations must be made through Hudson Valley Outfitters, 845.265.0221
- Boats, PFD's and paddles will be supplied by HVO.
- Participants are responsible for appropriate clothing.  Call for details or questions.
- In keeping with a high standard for instruction HVO will always keep classes small.
